Making Sense of English Spelling

This is a fun and engaging space for literacy campers and their families to learn about how English spelling works through fun activities. Check back weekly for new activities and games and earn a Literacy Certificate when you complete each stop on the literacy adventure map. Campers are to bring their work to camp where their map will be stamped.

Begin by clicking on the links below. Don’t forget to print your adventure map!

Welcome to English Spelling

Week 1 History of English

The English language has been shaped by its long history which has included many invasions from other tribes on what is now called England. Each invasion brought new words to the English language which began with Germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons, and Jutes) around the 5th century. These are now considered Old English words and make-up most of our everyday words like house, water, mother, eat. Other influences include French, Latin and Greek.
